General Election

We have been learning all about the General Election in Room 1. Over the past few weeks we formed parties for our constituency “St. Tiarnach’s”. We  designed campaign posters stating our aims for “St. Tiarnach’s”. We wrote group speeches which we read to the class outlining the areas we are passionate about and hoping to convince our classmates to vote for us. We debated several interesting topics also.

On Friday last the 7th February we filled out our ballot papers, and “Tir na nÓg” and “Athrú” were voted the two most popular parties. Oisín and Maja have been elected as class Taoiseach and Tanaiste.

Chemistry in the Kitchen

In Science we have been learning about chemicals that are acids, bases or some that are neutral. We used red cabbage to test if various everyday mixtures in our homes are acids, bases or neutral. We made predictions and enjoyed testing vinegar, water, baking soda, lemonade, baby shampoo, lemon juice, coke, washing-up liquid, dishwasher liquid and washing powder. All of the acids turned red/pink, the bases turned blue/green and the neutral chemicals turned to purple/yellow.

The Great Irish Famine

During our history lessons in January we were learning all about the Great Irish Famine. We enjoyed making brochures to show off our knowledge of the Famine.

In Drama we did freeze frames of different famine scenes. We also took part in conscience alley to try and convince a landlord not to evict a family during this period.

Aladdin

We enjoyed our school tour to the “Gaiety Theatre” in Dublin. We loved the panto and we even managed to get a photograph with two of the cast members afterwards.

Christmas Art

In class we brainstormed ideas for our 3d Christmas village “Old Dingo Town”. For homework each student constructed their piece. eg. Post Office, Garda station etc. Last Friday the 6th December we had a Christmas art day. We brought our projects into school and added finishing touches to our constructions using glitter, tinsel, cotton wool and paint.

During our Christmas art day we made other Christmas art pieces including 3d Christmas villages and Nativity scenes, 3d snowflakes and Christmas drawings.

We are very proud of our Christmas village on display outside our classroom.

Speed Dating on the Moon

As an oral language activity we had a lot of fun using “speed dating” to introduce the topic of “The Moon”. During this activity, each student became an expert on one aspect of the moon before moving around the classroom to share their information with other students.

Christmas Kindness

For the season of advent we are doing random acts of “Christmas Kindness” in Room 1. We brainstormed ways we could show kindness to each other as well as family members and others in our school community. We made “Kindness” Christmas trees and we complete acts of Christmas kindness daily.

Road Safety

We enjoyed our workshop on road safety.

GAA

We are very passionate about GAA in Room 1. Quite a few of our boys played on the Cumann na mBunscol team and did us proud. Sadhbh and Oisín were also both co-captains for their local GAA teams recently. In school we are very lucky to have weekly GAA sessions with Eamonn.

Buddy Reading

On Tuesdays and Thursdays the last six weeks half of our class have been reading with their buddy in 2nd Class at lunchtime. This is our very own “Time to Read” initiative. We enjoyed modelling good reading, reading along with our buddy and having discussions about each story we read. After Christmas the second half of our class will participate.
